The Frantz Fanon Research Unit is an independent organisation that aims to undertake and facilitate constructive social-science research that will benefit disadvantaged communities, in particular, the African-Caribbean community in the UK. It seeks to guide and influence public policy and to assist the development of community-based organisations. The Research Unit will work in partnership with academic institutions, NGOs, public institutions, individuals and private organisations. To achieve this aim the Research Unit will:
Win research contracts from funding organisations;
Win funding to undertake our own research;
Provide a research service for community based organisations to aid them with funding applications.
Provide training to deliver services
The Research Unit will disseminate work to as wide an audience as possible. This will be done through:
Publications in journals;
Publication of reports on our website;
Publication of a newsletter;
Press releases;
Meetings, conferences and seminars.
The Research Unit recognises that its strength comes from its outstanding community links and the bridge it provides between these communities and institutions. To maintain and build upon this, the Research Unit will:
Ensure that communities can contact the unit at any time;
Ensure that communities can access the work of the unit;
Work closely with and provide information to the other services located within the African-Caribbean Millennium Centre.
In order to achieve an output of high quality research the unit will operate and maintain an international Council of leading academics and leading local authority figures. The Council will:
Advise the unit on matters relating to research;
Provide expertise in relevant subjects;
Help to guide the research agenda;
Help establish links with community and business-focused research with black people across the Diaspora.
The Research Unit will:
Provide access to subjects;
Facilitate the research project;
Use Action Research as much as possible to leave a positive on those we work with;
Disseminate the results;
Provide as many resources as possible, for example meeting rooms and community consultation facilities.
