The Frantz Fanon Research Unit is a new and exciting division of the Afro-Caribbean Millennium Centre. We hope to bring together the voices of the black community, from academics to policy-makers, creating a nationwide network. We provide a bridge between government and the Afro-Caribbean community. At present, the black community is politically and economically under-represented in Britain; we hope to redress this balance. Never before has a community-based organisation had the chance to perform this role. Our doors are open to both researchers and local organisations to conduct professional studies with a sensitivity to the people we serve. We believe that we are offering a unique and groundbreaking role in the field of social research. As a major component of one of the UK’s leading black community organisations, with links that can only develop through a twenty-five year relationship with inner city communities, we have unparalleled access to BME groups both in Birmingham and across the UK. The Afro-Caribbean Millennium Centre offers a range of services to the black community. These include a senior citizens’ group; a welfare advice service; an employment resource centre; and a monthly surgery with the Jamaican High Commission, which attracts people from across the UK. It is also home to New Style Radio, the country’s only fully licensed black-led radio station. All these services come together in a new multi-million pound building based in Winson Green. This award winning building has already won a major award for architectural achievement. Opened in June 2004, it is supported by funding from the Millennium Commission, the European Regional Development Agency, SRB 6, Advantage West Midlands, the Arts Council of England and Birmingham City Council. It provides office space for the Research Unit, as well as facilities for meetings and conferences. We are uniquely placed to empower communities, community based organisations and inform debate in the UK through cutting edge research. Click Here to view our mission statement
